Hill Country Bed and Breakfast: Scenic Fall Drives Along the Devil’s Backbone

September 17th, 2012 by Michael Schneider

The Three Sisters of the Hill Country on FM 337 (Picture a Day September 24, 2009)

Take a road trip into the Texas Hill Country and enjoy the beautiful vistas of WimberleyValley. The Village of Wimberley is in a valley shadowed by The Devil’s Backbone, a large uplifted ridge that hooks around the area. Visiting the Devil’s Backbone is a must when visiting the area in the Fall, the hill sides are ablaze in reds, yellows and oranges.

It is easily accessed from the Blair House Inn by taking Ranch Road 12 east towards San Marcos until RR12 intersects with FM 32. Just turn left on FM 32– it snakes atop Devil’s Backbone.

About seven miles into the drive there is a rest area that offers a fantastic view of the entire valley, a true Hill Country site. If you continue down FM 32, you will arrive at Fischer Store Road. Fischer was once a bustling ranching and farming community and is still the site of many of the most interesting off-the-beaten-path adventures in the Hill Country. Start with the old Fischer store; a tin-clad, 1880s western-style building that now is home to an antiques and mementos from the community’s rich history. If you go a little further you will discover what Willie Nelson referred to as a “national treasure”, old Fischer Hall. The country singing and songwriting legend used Fischer Hall as a backdrop for some of his music videos. This historic Hill Country dance hall is over 130 years and has been a gathering place for the community for years and has hosted thousands of dances featuring virtually every Texas-based musician of note, including iconic Nelson.

Up and Down...

If you venture just a couples miles further you will land in the little town of Blanco. Be sure to stop by Real Ale Brewing for a tour and tasting of their newest beers “The Devil’s Backbone” named for the scenic ridge that runs between Blanco and Wimberley, Devil’s Backbone is a Belgian-style tripel.

Take a leisurely drive along the picturesque Devil’s Backbone located just minutes from the Blair House Inn. The Hill Country is wonderful place to take in the view and enjoy the ride.

It’s one of Texas’ most impressive natural wonders called Jacob’s Well. This incredible underwater cave is located just minutes from the Blair House Inn.

Jacob’s Well is one of the most significant natural geologic treasures in the Texas Hill Country. It is one of the longest underwater caves inTexasand an artesian spring. Jacob’s Well surges up thousands of gallons of water per minute and acts as headwaters to the beautiful Cypress Creek that flows through Wimberley, sustaining Blue Hole and the Blanco River, recharging the Edwards Aquifer, and finally replenishing estuaries in the Gulf of Mexico.

Jacob’s Well has been integral to the cultural and historical character of theWimberleyValley. The location has been a beloved swimming hole for generations, a gathering place for Native Americans and early settlers, and a rich habitat for aquatic species. Through the creation of the Jacob’s Well Natural Area, the land around the well has been unified to restore and protect this sensitive area for future generations.

Come share in Wimberley’s best-kept secret – Jacob’s Well, an artesian spring that flows out of one of the deepest underwater caves inTexas. Hear the stories about famous floods and scuba divers, learn the value of native grasses, and experience the stunning beauty of the spring that started this town. Docents lead tours on Saturday at10am.

Remember to bring your swimming suit because after seeing this beautiful place you’ll want to take a dip. Make a day out of it and order up one of our gourmet picnic baskets to enjoy under a shade tree at the park. Texas Bed and Breakfast: Wimberley Vacation at Blair House Inn

June 11th, 2012 by Michael Schneider

Inn view of the beautiful Hill CountryThis July we will be entering our 12th year of owning and operating the inn.  Both of us feel fortunate that during that time we have met so many kind and wonderful people.  We certainly appreciate your support and look forward to seeing you in the future.

We have come to the conclusion that the Hill Country is a great vacation spot for people who live inTexas.  If you have not planned a summer escape, here are a few things to consider regarding vacationing in central Texas.

□       The Hill Country terrain is peaceful and beautiful.  You get the impression you are in Tuscany, but it is only hours away.

□       You can get to this beautiful area without encountering long lines at an airport, and delays which nobody can explain.

□       You can drive your own car.  No standing in line at a car rental counter only to discover there are no more cars available.

□       You are not trapped in a hotel room which looks like all the other hotel rooms you have stayed in.

□       Because planning for the trip is simpler there is less stress.  Life is good!

□       You are never bored while staying at the Blair House Inn because you can experience regional wineries, visit great little Hill Country towns and state parks, float nearby rivers, and have a high flying adventure on the most exciting zip line inTexas.

Here are some of our guests’ favorite things to do:

Visit the Wimberley Glass Works, Bella Vista Ranch, Driftwood Winery for a great picnic with a breathtaking view of the Wimberley Valley, shopping downtown Wimberley, going to the Outlet Malls, Salt Lick BBQ, visiting the Johnson Ranch, Pacific War Museum, Gruene Hall and the Gristmill Restaurant, the Texas History Museum in Austin, antique hunting in New Braunfels, hiking the trails at Hamilton Pool and seeing the falls, and attending a cooking school to learn new techniques from a caring Chef.

Live, love, eat and enjoy your summer vacation.

Wherever you go, we wish you joy.

Best regards,

Mike and Vickie

Texas Bed and Breakfast “Spirits” Getaway!

What whisky will not cure, there is no cure for.

Most people are aware of Texas Wine Trail and the recognition it is receiving, but did you know that the Hill Country offers breweries and distilleries tours?  Maybe your significant other loves wine and it just is not your taste.  Have no fear we have found a compromise!  Local breweries, that you can even take a class to start your own brew, and whiskey and vodka distilleries that offers tours.  So knock out a couple of wineries and then hit the breweries!

Real Ale BrewingCo.~Blanco,TX

Welcome to the Texas Hill Country – the home of Real Ale Brewing Company, where a dedicated team of brewers produces quality handcrafted ales. Utilizing a 60-barrel stainless steel brewing system, we incorporate 100% malted grain, domestic and imported hops, and crystal clear water into our unique recipes. We’ve been brewing since 1996, and now you can find Real Ale all over theLoneStarState.

 Garrison Brothers Whiskey ~Johnson City,TX

The “Sit and Sip” Tour is a guided walk of the ranch-distillery with detailed information about bourbon whiskey and the history of Garrison Brothers. Our cooks and distillers will explain the process from “corn to cork.” You’ll smell the sweet corn cooking, taste sweet mash, and observe the fermenting distiller’s beer. You’ll tour the legendary still house and sample high proof “white dog” right from the stills. Finally, we’ll walk you through our barrel barn for a small sample of our limited release. This tour takes about an hour.

Dripping Springs Vodka ~ Dripping Springs, TX

Dripping Springs Vodka is handcrafted in the Texas Hill Country, in small 50 gallon batches. It’s a family run comany and was the 3rd distillery in the state.

What ever flavor is your forte, make sure to plan your Texas Hill Country getaway with a “twist” and enjoy all there is to offer!

Lady Bird Johnson Wild Flower Center

Now we all know the most beautiful time of year in Texas is wild flower season!  Lady Bird Johnson was a pioneer in establishing and maintaining the beautiful sights of Central Texas.  Lady Bird Wild Flower Center was created in 1982 to help preserve and restore the beauty and biological richness of North America.  Texas jumped on board and the program has been a success ever since.  You can visit the WFC any time of year, but we suggest the Spring to truly appreciate the natural beauty.  (Below is the hours and days of operation)
