The Three Sisters of the Hill Country on FM 337 (Picture a Day September 24, 2009)

Take a road trip into the Texas Hill Country and enjoy the beautiful vistas of WimberleyValley. The Village of Wimberley is in a valley shadowed by The Devil’s Backbone, a large uplifted ridge that hooks around the area. Visiting the Devil’s Backbone is a must when visiting the area in the Fall, the hill sides are ablaze in reds, yellows and oranges.

It is easily accessed from the Blair House Inn by taking Ranch Road 12 east towards San Marcos until RR12 intersects with FM 32. Just turn left on FM 32– it snakes atop Devil’s Backbone.

About seven miles into the drive there is a rest area that offers a fantastic view of the entire valley, a true Hill Country site. If you continue down FM 32, you will arrive at Fischer Store Road. Fischer was once a bustling ranching and farming community and is still the site of many of the most interesting off-the-beaten-path adventures in the Hill Country. Start with the old Fischer store; a tin-clad, 1880s western-style building that now is home to an antiques and mementos from the community’s rich history. If you go a little further you will discover what Willie Nelson referred to as a “national treasure”, old Fischer Hall. The country singing and songwriting legend used Fischer Hall as a backdrop for some of his music videos. This historic Hill Country dance hall is over 130 years and has been a gathering place for the community for years and has hosted thousands of dances featuring virtually every Texas-based musician of note, including iconic Nelson.

Up and Down...

If you venture just a couples miles further you will land in the little town of Blanco. Be sure to stop by Real Ale Brewing for a tour and tasting of their newest beers “The Devil’s Backbone” named for the scenic ridge that runs between Blanco and Wimberley, Devil’s Backbone is a Belgian-style tripel.

Take a leisurely drive along the picturesque Devil’s Backbone located just minutes from the Blair House Inn. The Hill Country is wonderful place to take in the view and enjoy the ride.
