Bella Vista Ranch Olive Oil Pressing: Blair House Inn

September 22nd, 2013 by Michael Schneider

Bella Vista Ranch

Blair House Inn is surrounded by some excellent Texas hill country wineries. One winery in particular, Bella Vista Ranch, also produces delicious olive oil on their property. Now is the season to start pressing the olives. They invite everyone to come out and watch as they begin olive oil pressing to produce their next tasty batch. Every Saturday from late September until December see the Bella Vista Ranch in full working order!

First Texas Olive Oil Company is a family-run business, specializing in FRESH olive oil and other fresh, complementary foods. Their products are based on the fruits and vegetables grown at the Bella Vista Ranch in Wimberley, Texas – blackberry and raspberry bushes (planted between six varieties of olive trees), figs and many other fruits and vegetables.

In 1996 Jack Dougherty, who grew up in the orchards of Santa Clara valley and later had a career working as an executive in the computer industry, purchased a dilapidated ranch with the intention of making it a working ranch. Today it has become an agricultural destination spot. Jack realized that Texas Hill Country soil and weather are akin to the Mediterranean, and he could not resist a stab at growing olives. The olive trees and berry bushes on Bella Vista Ranch were planted in 1998 and they opened the “frantoio” (olive pressing facility) in year 2001.

Bella Vista Cellars produces a range of Italian varietals, as well as blackberry wine, from the fruit off the Ranch. They are passionate about high-quality, fresh produce and products. They invite you to visit their tasting room to sample the olive oil, wine, and other gourmet foods available.

This is definitely something you do not want to miss. Bella Vista Ranch is proud of what they do and Blair House Inn is proud to tell our guests. Take a look at our availability for the fall season. Book a stay with us and make a trip to watch the olive oil pressing magic. Head out to the Texas hill country soon for a relaxing weekend at Blair House Inn.

Chef Sebastian will be presenting at It’s About Thyme Garden Center

September 15th, 2011 by Michael Schneider

Kitchen garden at Bolen residence

There is no better way to try and beat the Texas heat than start by planning a kitchen garden for your home.  Our very own Chef Sebastian will be giving a presentation at It’s About Thyme in Austin, TX on September 25th at 2 pm.  He will give his own advice paired with the experts at It’s About Thyme on how to produce a striving home garden.  Texas has some of the richest soils, but you have to keep in mind of the drought conditions.

Chef will also be giving a cooking demonstration with the herbs that you could choose to grow in your garden.  If you don’t have the green thumb you wish you had, you can still use the wonderful recipes by shopping at your local farmer’s market.  Fresh herbs can take any dish to the next level and give it explosive flavor.

If you  are not available to join Chef Sebastian for his presentation you can look into joining us for our ever popular spring cooking schools Cooking with Fresh Herbs and BBQ with Fresh Herbs.  We have to have faith that this drought and heat can’t last forever!  Keep a view to the horizon and dream of cooler and moister rich days to come.
