The Best Texas Hill Country Towns Worth Exploring

The landscapes of Texas Hill Country are truly spectacular, which is, at least in part, why this area has become such a popular getaway destination in Texas. Texas Hill Country is not only home to the state's top wineries but also some of the top attractions.  There are charming Texas Hill Country towns at the heart of every great getaway here, most notably Wimberley, New Braunfels, and Fredericksburg.

Though these three Texas Hill Country towns are a great place to start your vacation planning, there is undoubtedly much more to see and love about Texas Hill Country.  Base yourself at our Hill Country Bed and Breakfast, and let us show you the best of it this summer! Below, we'll go into more detail on our favorite Texas Hill Country towns.

Wimberley

We may be partial, but we think Wimberley is one of the best Texas Hill Country towns to visit. It's located where the Blanco River meets Cypress Creek, which offers plenty of great opportunities for recreation throughout the year. In fact, Wimberley is one of the best Texas Hill Country towns to visit on a hot summer day when you're looking for a way to escape the heat!  It's home to some of the best swimming holes in the state, including nearby Blue Hole Regional Park and Jacob’s Well Natural Area.

Beyond beautiful swimming holes and outdoor attractions, the town of Wimberley itself is a great place to spend a day. The town boasts lovely art and music scenes, and the city's vibe is laid-back - the perfect compliment to your getaway at our Wimberley, TX Bed and Breakfast. Downtown Wimberley is packed with boutiques, galleries, and art studios, too. Wimberley also hosts one of the largest flea markets in the area on the first Saturday of the month, known as Wimberley Market Days.

New Braunfels/Gruene

New Braunfels is one of the most historic Texas Hill Country towns, perhaps best known for its historic district, Gruene.  Gruene is home to the popular Gruene Dance Hall, considered the oldest continually operating dance hall in Texas. Needless to say, visitors old and young flock to this dance hall for a great time!

Gruene is delightful, and its historic streets are steeped in German heritage. The walkable streets are tree-lined, offering plenty of shade in the summer, and are packed with shops, restaurants, and more. The Gruene historic district is a wonderful place to hunt for antiques and unknown treasures. The Guadalupe River also runs through the heart of town, offering plenty of opportunities to get out on the water for a relaxing afternoon of tubing.

Breathtaking Lavender Farms in Texas near Blanco, one of the most beautiful Texas Hill Country Towns

Blanco

We recently wrote about Blanco as it relates to lavender. We could perhaps consider it the most fragrant of the Texas Hill Country towns, as Blanco is the lavender capital of Texas and home to several stunning lavender farms in Texas, not to mention host to the popular Blanco Lavender Festival. Though we'll soon be reaching peak season for lavender blooms in Texas Hill Country, there are plenty more reasons to visit This Texas Hill Country town.

You'll want to take a refreshing dip at Blanco State Park during the summer. The Blanco River runs right through the park, and the waters here are perfect for swimming or tubing. After you've spent your energy for the day, don't miss your chance to refuel with some of the best Texas BBQ. Old 300 BBQ is legendary for a reason! You may even want to round out your afternoon meal with a delicious craft brew at Real Ale Brewing - it's one of the top-rated breweries in Texas.

Fredericksburg

Fredericksburg is one of the more popular Texas Hill Country towns, but it's also one of the most crowded. Even so, it's worth taking the one-hour drive northwest to explore the fascinating German heritage of Fredericksburg. Fredericksburg is one of the most popular Texas Hill Country towns for wine tasting, as it's located on Wine Road 290 - which is a beautiful drive even if you aren't looking to stop at wineries.

While visiting Fredericksburg, we recommend you spend some time on Main Street, shopping your way from one boutique or gallery to the next, or spending some time antiquing in the Warehouse District. With so many wine tasting rooms situated in the downtown core, it's easy to squeeze in a tasting or two while you're there as well. Don't forget to grab some tasty German food - and maybe even some beer - while you're in town at one of this Texas Hill Country town's many restaurants!

If you're looking for something to do in nature, you can't go wrong with visiting Enchanted Rock State Natural Area. Enchanted Rock is a massive dome of pink granite that offers an extraordinary view from the top that is positively mesmerizing.
