Your Guide to Visiting Jacob’s Well
What Is Jacob’s Well?
Jacob’s Well is a spring flowing from the bed of Cypress Creek. The 12-foot diameter mouth of this summertime swimming hole descends about 30 feet before winding through a series of underwater caves and passages to a depth of over 120 feet below the surface. Jacob’s Well is a popular swimming spot that draws plenty of visitors every year. You can wade through the clear waters of Cypress Creek float over the opening of the spring while gazing out at the beautiful, lush scenery. It’s a fantastic spot to hang out during the early morning, especially since the crowds start to convene around lunchtime.
While diving down into the well may seem compelling, we strongly recommend staying at the surface, as the lower dwelling caves are dangerous for swimmers. Only permitted cave divers are allowed to dive here.
What Can You Do There?
While Jacob’s Well is the highlight of this scenic creek in the Texas Hill Country, there are other things to do around the spring. Jacob’s Well Natural Area provides plenty of hiking, birding, and wildlife viewing opportunities in addition to swimming! You can spend the entire day exploring the area or stop in for a morning swim before heading out to discover the rest of Texas Hill Country. The choice is yours!
Where Is It and When Can You Visit?
Jacob’s Well is right around the corner from Wimberley! It is about a 10-minute car ride from the Blair House Inn, so you don’t have to worry about long driving times to and from the attraction. While the Natural Area is open year-round, swimming season runs from May 1st through October 1st. The hours for Jacob’s Well Natural Area are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day (no entry permitted after 5:30 p.m.). Be sure to check the Hays County website for holiday closings and other important information.
